ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) was established in 1969, is now recognised as a world leader in space research and technology. ISRO has a proud history and can demonstrate clear successes. In its roadmap that augments India’s incremental advances towards being player on the global stage of space exploration.

It started with their first satellite, Aryabhata in 1975 and has achieved so many milestones. Its landmark success was in executing the Mars Orbiter Mission. India can be proud of a history and capability to develop low-cost technologies that stand as examples for the world.

Through its scientific spirit and faith in innovation, the organization has achieved significant breakthroughs like Chandrayaan-1 mission to moon (2008) and ambitious Chandrayaan-2 lunar mission this year (2024) as it attempted a soft landing of rover on south pole of Moon.

The objectives of ISRO are not just confined to exploration. Therefore, it is taking on the responsibility and providing long term benefits in Space Technology for National Development. The organization has done great work in the fields of telecommunications, navigation, meteorology, disaster management and remote sensing to promote India’s overall perspective towards other countries globally.

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS OF ISRO

The trajectory of ISRO over the decade and more has been a sequence of excellent accomplishments.  It made India one proud nation globally with respect to space exploration. Along with it, pushing global industry standards simultaneously.

Mars Orbiter Mission: Mangalyaan (2013), one of the stellar achievements in ISRO’s illustrious history is sending up Mars orbiter mission. It was launched by PSLV with a budget of just $74 million. This mission made India the first country to have been able to reach Mars in its very first attempt.  This is a testament of ISRO’s skill and precision at interplanetary navigation.

Satellite Technology: Along with its Mars exploration, ISRO has also become an undisputed king in the field of satellite technology. The formation of its own satellite navigation system with members like the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) has tremendously upgraded India’s Positioning abilities. It also contributed to strengthening strategic autonomy. The satellites have also revolutionized communication, broadcasting as well on agriculture and disaster responses.

Chandrayaan Missions: The lunar exploration. In 2008, ISRO launched mission Chandrayaan-1 the first Indian moon probe which confirmed India is a stepping stone for further exploration of Moon. The finding of water molecules on the moon’s surface by Moon Impact Probe pointed to a very important achievement in lunar science.

Two years after Chandrayaan-1, ISRO embarked on the Chandayyaan-2 mission in 2019 to land a rover at moon’s south pole and push forward India Moon frontier.

CONTRIBUTION IN THE FIELD OF SPACE FROM ISRO

ISRO is involved in extensive international collaborations for advancement of scientific research and technology at a global level. In Space exploration, ISRO have made worldwide cooperation in various projects via strategic alliances and cooperative ventures with countries like USA. In addition to expanding ISRO’s footprints in the scientific spectrum, these collaborations facilitate trailblazing projects and endeavours among space research fraternity.

Participation in Global Space Dialogues: ISRO actively engages in global space dialogues. It also contributes to the world wide activities undertaken by other international organizations for exploring possibilities of a different kind. This helps ISRO keep updated with the global space community and learn from sharing & exchanging of ideas, experiences, best practices, methodologies etc. 

Collaborative Projects and Shared Achievements: The collaborative efforts of ISRO have resulted in a few successful joint missions such as its partnership with NASA for Mars Orbiter Mission. These add-on missions showcase ISRO’s capacity to work alongside international space agencies. Furthermore, reinforcing its technological prowess and bolstering India as a cosmic superpower. They provide the added advantage of tackling projects that are larger and more scientific which ISRO wouldn’t have otherwise done independently.

ISRO’S SATELLITE LAUNCHES

The India Space Research Organisation has demonstrated that it can launch advance satellites successfully. The organization’s long term perspective plan extension shows the growth through years of 2012 to year 2025. It plans sale application in area that includes satellite navigation, communication satellites, earth observation or remote sensing organizations.

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle – PSLV: The PSLV has gained a reputation as one of ISRO’s most reliable and flexible launch vehicles, given its historical missions to different orbits. Be it developing Earth observation satellites for remote sensing applications or launching Communication and Navigation satellite. PSLVs have played a significant role in advancing India’s Space technology. PSLV has become a popular satellite carrier and serves both domestic requirements as well as those from abroad.

Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV): Likewise, GSLV has played a significant role in spectacularly raising the profile of India’s space infrastructure. It has played a crucial role in launching heavier payloads into geostationary orbits is concerned. The GSLV, with a higher payload capacity, has provided ISRO the facility of launching heavier communication satellites which are essential to keep up continuous broadcasting and telecommunication services throughout the length and breadth of India.

Impact on Various Sectors: India’s satellite launches have made the country independent in communication and broadcasting services. Along with it, it has brought revolution in sectors like agriculture, disaster management and environmental monitoring. ISRO is committed to using space technology for the betterment of society. This is clearly evidenced by its satellite missions in areas such as meteorology (weather forecasting), telemedicine, and land use planning. o Environmental monitoring: Satellites provide real-time data on environmental degradation, pollution levels and deforestation. This influence the development of conservation efforts or sustainable resource management.

Weather Forecasting Satellites: Weather satellites help bring accurate and timely forecasts, which reduce the impact of severe storms etc. thus improving general forecast accuracy.Telemedicine: Telemedicine services with the aid of communication satellites serving remote areas providing health facilities and consultancies.
