Civil Services Exam: There has been a lot of talk about the New Education Policy issued by the Central Government that is quite radical in some of its decisions. To talk of the highlights, changes in the duration of the UG courses and the qualitative changes in the Masters’ degree have remained the most noteworthy changes. Obviously, the focus on the linguistic importance of the ancient Indian languages (Sanskrit) also remains a key feature of this policy. Notably, respective mother tongues now gains greater importance, and the English Language has been made optional till class 8.

In this context, speculations arose regarding the status of the Civil Services Exam Aptitude Test (CSAT). According to sources, the examination retains its importance in the Indian education system, amidst conjectures of its being dropped with the new education policy recently framed by the Central Government. It is relevant to note here that the examination is controlled by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission), and Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, has said in no ambiguous terms that the examination will hold the same importance as it did before.

Therefore, all the ratifications that come under the exam—Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and others will use the candidates’ performance in the CSAT as integral to their recruitment in the respective posts. Speculations regarding the interview stage being replaced by a psychological test have also been denied by the Union Minister. So, it is safe to assume that the status of the CSAT exams will remain pristine, at least for the current academic session.

Further, it has been decided that the preliminary examinations for Civil Services will be conducted on the 4th of October, 2020. It is important to note that the candidates will have to comply with the guidelines issued by the ministry as a precondition for appearing for the examination. Among the most obvious directives are the instructions to wear masks and carry hand sanitizers to the venue. These instructions are mandatory and must be followed by every candidate coming to their respective venues to appear for the exam, failing which, there might be consequences.

The examination will have two objective sections (multiple choice questions) with a maximum of 400 marks. The syllabus for this exam is explicated in subsection A of section II, and this exam is a screening test that will deem the successful candidates eligible for the Main exam. The admit cards for the prelim exams have been released on the UPSC websites, and students can download it by visiting the site. Carrying a copy of this admit card to the examination centre is a mandate, along with other instructions mentioned in the site. The candidates must also reach the exam centre at least 10 minutes before the commencement of each session (there will be two sessions). Therefore, for the morning session, the students must reach the venue by 9.10 am, and for the afternoon session, they must be present at the venue by 2.20 pm.
